One more thing - Mattie is admittably bad at math. Doesn't this perpetuate (from our point of view) the stereotype that girls and math don't mix? Schools have been struggling against this, even now. I happen to be pretty good at math, and enjoy female role models who exemplify a well-rounded academic aptitude.
What an interestingly fabulous observation, Tamara! I was thinking the same thing, like it seems to be more culturally accepted that if girls do well academically, it is in languages and social sciences, where as boys are relegated to the math/science realm. Some things never seem to change. And how appropriate for your AED 663 topic, too! :)
