D, I'm so glad you raised this issue. One of my interests is analyzing how teachers are represented in popular culture. This description is not at all surprising to me.

I would like to teach a course in the history of representations of female teachers in books, movies, etc.

There's a wonderful book I think you would find fascinating--"You Don't Look Like a Teacher" by Sandra Weber. It examines these images both in popular culture and in students' own constructions in drawings of teachers.
